    On the nose, there is sea breeze, plenty of salt, vanilla, and bonfire smoke. The palate has ash, toasted oak, and sweet coconut chips before leading into the lingering and satisfying finish.

    Founded 1879 in Aberdeen by the Graham brothers, Black Bottle attribute their expertise to ingenious alchemy: Gordon Graham’s historic recipe, a strong use of peated malts, an alligator skin char and a marrying of the blend in virgin oak casks.

    On the nose, we find that initial smoke and peat that Black Bottle is famed for, with an undercurrent of figs, fudge and carrot cake. The palate brings in a creamy vanilla, with earthy honey, rich caramel and mixed spice. A smoky sweet aftertaste follows.

A small batch expression released as part of the Alchemy Series, this double cask blended whisky uses two spirits; malt aged in Spanish sherry barrels, and 12-year-old grain matured in red wine casks. The resulting expression arrives at 46.3% abv and is bursting with fruity and winey flavours.

    The nose gives hints of dried fruits, walnuts, sun-dried raisins, and orange. The palate gives a full, rich mouth-feel, with oaky notes followed by a burst of red berries. Grapes, red wine, and burnt toffee surge through the dry finish.

    Aromas of lemon, orange, caramel, and orchard fruits waft up on the nose. Zesty spice awaits on the palate, with sweet vanilla, and barley sugars. The finish also harbours some peppery spice, with nutty, creamy hints in a well-balanced exit.

A first-rate blended whisky, this uses the highest quality single malt and single grain whiskies from Scotland’s premium distilleries. The spirit in this bottling ranges from 40 to 51 years old. Single grain whiskies make up 14% of the blend, from Caledonian and Dumbarton distilleries. The bulk of the dram is made up from Glenlivet, Macallan, Caperdonich, Highland Park and Bunnahabhain. This is an expression sure to make Black Bull a recognisable name in the blended whisky arena. Only 1500 bottles are available in this, the seventh batch of its limited edition release. At 47.6% abv, this is free from chill filtration, any added colourant, and is a cask strength whisky.

    Expect a sweet nose, full of resonant notes of toffee apples, milk chocolate, tropical fruits, toffee apples, and a hint a sherried presence. The palate continues this presence, with fruit cake, hazelnuts, and vanilla pairing with a vibrant fruitiness. The finish is long, smooth, and lingering, with a maple syrup note on the exit. Phenomenal.

Made with molasses sourced from Queensland, the spirit is double distilled and matured for three years in 100 litre Tawny wine casks. The label depicts a sunny day at the distillery, with the owners’ Brian and Genise’s dog chasing away a group of kangaroos. Bottled at 57.2% abv.

    Expect aromas of sticky ginger cake, dried fruit and molasses, undercut by tobacco, clove and tea. The palate is full of ripe plums and mango, blackberry jam, and a touch of black olive. A tannic and lasting close, with hints of roast parsnip and chilli.
