Formerly one of the less well-known gems of Speyside, coveted by those in the know, Mortlach’s light is now being firmly pushed from under its bushel with a luxurious new range of single malts.

This 18 year old expression is matured in a combination of first-fill ex-sherry butts as well as refill European and American oak casks to produce a rich and rounded dram.

The bottles for this range are designed to reflect Victorian engineering designs in a tribute to one of the key figures in Mortlach’s history, George Cowie, a civil engineer.

Another knockout edition in the Private Collection series. This is a 43-year-old Speyside single malt, laid to rest at the Mortlach Distillery in February 1978 and bottled by Gordon & Macphail. This expression was matured in a refill American hogshead cask and arrives with a very small yield of only 96 bottles, presented at 50.4% abv.

Poached pears, roasted hazelnuts, violets, and dried banana arrive on the nose. Rich tropical fruits combine with aniseed, milk chocolate, orange segments, mature oak, and milk chocolate. The medium bodied finish weaves together notes of toasted almonds and red apples in a knockout finale.

Hailing from ‘The Beast of Dufftown’, this 20-year-old Mortlach whisky is dubbed ‘Cowie’s Blue Seal’ in tribute to one of the original Mortlach bottlings dating back to 1909. Matured exclusively in sherry casks and bottled at a strength of 43.4% abv, this is a whisky that would have made the great Alexander Cowie proud.

The nose is dense, elegant and intruguing with its aromas of dried fruit, cedarwood, leather and tobacco. On the palate, notes of aromatic citrus dominate, alongside touches of wood spice, barbecue pork crackling, berries and cocoa nibs leading to a complex finish full of gingerbread, raisin and liquorice.

Part of Diageo’s 2019 Special Releases, this limited edition Speyside single malt was distilled at the ‘Beast of Dufftown’, Mortlach distillery. Matured in first fill Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry-seasoned casks for 26 years before bottling at a natural cask strength of 53.3% abv, just 3,883 individually numbered bottles have been produced worldwide.

The first available release in the new luxury Mortlach range, the Rare Old expression has been matured in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks and balances distillery character with cask influence to create a wonderfully tasty dram with a meaty character reminiscent of one of the distillery’s former bottlings – the 16 year old Flora and Fauna edition.
