    This heavily peated Islay single malt whisky combines a respect for the Islay island with contemporary practices. Using only Islay-grown barley, this expression has a complex maturation process. The spirit firstly spends seven years in ex-American whiskey barrels, before then being finished in French wine casks, and then being married back together for bottling. This gives is a complex layering of delicate flavours. Using Islay spring water in its bottling, it is free from chill filtration and is colouring free.

    It has a colouring of pale gorse flowers and has a strength of 50% abv. The aromas that arrive at the nose are those of red berry fruits and floral notes which follow on the palate. These are joined by toasted oak notes and hints of coffee and chocolate, before leading to a dramatic smoky finish. A top-drawer dram from Bruichladdich.

    This expression from Bruichladdich’s Port Charlotte range is the first UK release in the Cask Exploration Series. Distilled in 2010 from barley peated to 40ppm, this single malt has been matured in a 50/50 split of first-fill American whiskey barrels and second-fill French wine barriques before being married together for one year in high provenance MR casks from the Bordeaux left bank.

    The nose has powerful peat smoke with summer fruits and vanilla. The palate brings more peat and sweet fruits with toasted oak, maple syrup and chocolate coated coffee emerging, before a medicinal smoke in the finish with drying oak and creamy vanilla.

    Port Charlotte OLC: 01 2010 was distilled in 2010 from a 2009 crop of Scottish barley. The distillate was first filled into ex-Bourbon, ex-Syrah and ex-VDN (vin doux naturel) casks.

    The liquid was then transferred into Fernando de Castilla’s oloroso hogsheads in 2018.

    The whisky is said to be dry with earthy peat and roasted coffee, lime and figs. This leads to flavours of chocolate and vanilla, finishing with a hint of smoke.

    The Port Charlotte PAC:01 2011 is the latest addition to the heavily peated Cask Exploration Series of heavily peated Islay single malts. This edition has been matured for a minimum of six years in ex-American oak casks before being transferred for a two-year finish into Pauillac red wine barrels showcasing the distillery’s barbeque smoke character paired with the finest of French oak.

    With a rich ruby colour and an abundance of dried fruits and spice, this Port Charlotte is bottled at 56.1% ABV natural cask strength, free from chill filtration and all natural colouring. The nose opens with cloves and ginger along with chocolate, caramelised toffee, and delicate coconut and vanilla notes. On the palate oak and malt lead the flavours, followed by thick smoke, fresh citrus and dried fruit. Peat smoke commands the finish with floral coconut and a salty marine element.

Bottled in November 2016 at a strength of 55.9% abv, only 142 have been produced.Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892) was a poet, considered to be one of the finest of the Victorian era. In 1850, Tennyson became poet laureate and remained so until his death, the longest serving to date. The first peer to be created for his writing, Lord Tennyson is best remembered for his tribute to British cavalrymen, The Charge of the Light Brigade.

    A limited edition, natural cask strength single malt from Port Ellen, a closed distillery on the Isle of Islay. One of the most rare and highly sought after malts, this is the fourteenth of a limited series of annual releases and is the oldest release of Port Ellen ever to come from the original distillers. Annual allocation ensures availability of this irreplaceable malt for just a little longer.

    Distilled in 1978 and matured in refill European Oak and refill American Oak casks, only 2,964 individually numbered bottles were produced .

    The colour of Golden Syrup, it has a mild aroma, with a coal bunker in the background, and a fugitive scent of custard. Dry and mineralic overall, but with sweet scents of flower honey and candlewax. Any smoky aromas soon fade. The taste is rich, savoury and sophisticated, with clean smoke and hessian in the finish, then a cooling taste of clove.

Distilled in 1978 and matured in refill American oak hogsheads and refill European oak butts, only 2,940 individually numbered bottles are available worldwide.The nose opens with a faint smoke growing sweet with hessian and warm wood, before honey-cured smoked meats, sweet mint and sharp citrus emerge, eventually becoming dark cocoa, vanilla and more wood smoke. The palate offers a mix of wood ash, jam tarts, treacle toffee and caramelised orange with an all pervading smoke. The finish is long and cooling with toffee apple and wood smoke aspects.

    Distilled at the original Port Ellen in 1979, these nine casks of whisky were discovered and brought together by the master distiller to craft a unique limited edition release: the oldest and most limited to date. Each cask was matured for at least 40 years before all nine were married together and bottled at a natural cask strength of 50.9% abv, free from any artificial colouring. Presented in a beautiful case, under lock and key, this release is limited to just 1,380 bottles worldwide.

    The nose is delicate, with a mild smoke complemented by burnt orange, fresh herbs and a grassy note. The palate brings a much more pronounced smoke, alongside rich leather and pipe tobacco with a gentle wood spice. the finish is long and satisfying with a wisp of smoke remaining.

    We could not be prouder to announce this Allt a Bhaine 1996 Rare Find, exclusive to The Whisky Shop. Allt A Bhaine is a distillery that was built to supply malt whisky to the Chivas Regal blend. In 1989, it was extensively expanded. This bottle is free from chill filtration and has a natural cask-imparted colour.

    Distilled in 1996 and bottled in 2020, this 24 year old whisky is bursting with character. One of only 85 bottles, all sourced from a single-cask, Allt a Bhaine made its name as a distillery that sought to blend the fruity characteristics of Speyside whiskies with a hit of peatiness that you would typically find in the Islay distilleries. It has aromas of sweet citrus, vanilla, white chocolate, and fragrant spices. The palate is one of dark fruits, melon, coconut and vanilla. The finish balances delicate fruit flavours with exotic spices, with hints of malty, disgestive biscuits all combining to provide a luxurious finish. Take a dive into Speyside history.

    This single malt offering from Gleann Mór Spirits is a 15-year-old Islay whisky. The distillery is unknown. It was distilled in 2006, and bottled in 2021. It spent its fifteen years of maturation in an ex-bourbon barrel, and is bottled at a cask strength 52.1% abv. A punchy dram, this arrives without chill filtration or artificial colouring. 

    The nose this expression has is clean, with rich mineral aromas. The palate is complex, with notes of orchard fruits, grapefruit, and gooseberry, pairing with a wisp of smoke and creamy vanilla. Expect a long finish, with lingering citrus and smokey notes. Divine.

    Somewhat of a ‘mystery malt’, this independently bottled Speyside single malt does not have the origin of distillation on the label; there are some clues to be found as to where that might be though… Distilled in 1982 and bottled 39 years later in 2021 for The Whisky Shop by Gleann Mór, this a stunning addition to their Rare Find series. Just 180 bottles were produced at 48.7% ABV, with natural colour and free from chill filtration.

    The nose opens to reveal dried mango and angelica root, with sticky dundee marmalade and a hint of furniture polish. The palate is creamy and sweet followed by a long herbal finish with notes of milk chocolate.
