This 21 Year Old Blair Athol Single Malt is a batch strength dram. This expression comes from a marriage of two ex-bourbon hogsheads, distilled in February 1997. Both of these casks were at a natural strength, and the resulting marriage is bottled at 60.2% abv. This is a yield of only 266 bottles, and this is the twelfth batch of this dram.

Discover apricot jam, Manuka honey, ginger, pepper, cinnamon and a subtle twist of oak on the nose. The palate is mouth coating, warming, and has a particular weight to it. You can expect notes of baked apple, dried fruit, apricot and pineapple. The finish combines these elements in an oily finish that goes down with a kick of spice. A controlled, delicately balanced success story.

One of the 2017 Special Releases from Diageo, this limited edition was distilled at Pitlochry’s Blair Athol distillery in 1993. Matured in ex-bodega European oak butts for 23 years, this is the first new bottling from the distillery since 2003. Presented at a natural cask strength of 58.4% abv, only 5,514 individually numbered bottles are available worldwide.The nose is dry with peanut brittle and honey atop crème brûlée and baked bananas with a complex and warming spice. The palate is rich, smooth and sweet, with spicy oak and liquorice amidst fruity aspects. Treacle toffee and aniseed turn to lemon zest and herbs. The finish is sweetly fragrant and spicy with fresh mint and charred oak.

An 18 year old expression bottles at 43%volume. Andrew Rankin, Bowmore’s Production Director, specifies a mix of cask types for each bottling of his single malts, including the Bowmore 18YO. The casks are matured in the distillery’s No.1 Vaults, built in the late 1700s and the oldest maturation warehouse in Scotland. It is also the only warehouse below sea level – dark and damp, and the thick stone walls seep salt water. So when you taste this splendid malt, think of where it spent the last eighteen years. There is no substitute for time in the right casks under the right conditions!

Polished beech in colour, the aroma seems to match this: polished wood to the fore, with gentle smoke behind. In between are scents of dry seaweed and canvas, hemp ropes and lanolin, then caramel rises to dominate. The taste is a surprise after the mellow aroma: big, sweet, salty and smoky at full strength; more floral, less salty and smoky at reduced strength. Both with some spice in the finish.
