    A heavily peated single malt, at 34ppm, Batch 3 of the superb anCnoc Peatheart certainly lives up to its name. The heart of the Scottish peatlands is found in the north-west, where Knockdhu distillery finds its remote home. This is the valuable fuel for this expression, which holds peat at the centre of its taste profile. Presented at 46% abv, free from chill filtration and at natural colour. 

    Aromas of sweet barbeque and earthy peat mingle with honey and sweet spice, which combine to create a fragrant, grassy character on the nose. The palate brings the smoke, peaty and layered upon green apple, citrus and vanilla bean sweetness. Hints of oily smoke arise, lingering on into the lengthy finish and joined by a sweet spice.

    Capturing the essence of Traigh Bhan beach, beautiful shores known locally as the Singing Sands, this is the sixth edition of this cult Ardbeg annual bottling. Matured in American oak and Oloroso sherry casks, the rare 19-year-old Islay malt is produced in small batches and bottled at 46.2% abv.

    Wafts of olive oil on the nose, with aromas of tar and soot which mingle with chocolate ginger biscuits and fresh cut grass. A slightly oily and mouthcoating palate brings an intense hit of sweet mint, followed by classic Ardbeg creosote, coal tar soap, and a hint of smoked pineapple and dark chocolate. Peppermint creams, bonfire embers, and camphor notes lead to a lingering finish of coffee and liquorice.

    Expect intense initial aromas of charcoal, creosote and treacle toffee, with hints of fennel and celery. Herbal notes then appear alongside milk chocolate, aromatic woodsmoke and salty sea spray. On the palate, a distinctively peppery mouthfeel eases into a complex symphony of flavours; treacle toffee, aniseed, salted caramel chocolate, eucalyptus, menthol and briar wood, before giving way to more savoury notes like charcoal, smoked bacon and tar. The aftertaste is long and lingering, with a suggestion of peppermint and clove.

    Ardbeg’s first barbeque-inspired expression, this unique Islay whisky is the work of renowned Master Distiller, Dr Bill Lumsden, and chef, Christian Stevenson (aka DJ BBQ). Matured in a combination of three toasted casks, Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, double charred oak casks and BBQ casks, the result is a dram with a meaty, peaty punch. Presented at 50.9% abv.

    Intense and powerful, with lots of salt and tar, but also with an appealing dark chocolate sweetness and rich red fruits and muscovado sugar. Lots of pepper on the palate, and a mouthful of black tarry espresso balanced by soft, rich fruits. A long, powerful finish with black coffee, chocolate coated cherries and hot pepper sauce.

    One of the distillery’s Committee Releases, Ardbeg Fermutation is a bright and zesty expression that is bound to impress. Ardbeg Fermutation is a result of a mishap at the distillery – the boiler stopped working and as a result distillation couldn’t occur after the usual 72 hour fermentation process. Instead, the wash was distilled after a three week fermentation. Free from chill filtration, this 13-year-old dram was matured in first fill and refill bourbon casks and was bottled at 49.4% abv.

    The result? A bold and vibrant whisky. Zingy aromas of peppermint and garden herbs come to meet the nose. The palate is malty, with sweet hints of butterscotch complementing the persisting minty notes before leading into the satisfying finish.

    The most full-blown Ardbeg ever! Released in preparation for Ardbeg Day 2023 on the 3rd of June, the fan-favourite distillery have released this experimental limited edition bottling. Heavy Vapours refers to the fact that they have foregone the purifier during distillation, which allows the heaviest vapours to rise up the still and condense back into the liquid – resulting in their most intense, aromatic and smoky flavour. The bottle and giftbox display a playful design by illustrator Dilraj Mann, who has also created an accompanying graphic novel available via a QR code on the label. Presented at 46% abv, and free from chill filtration. 

    Expect pungent and aromatic aromas reminiscent of a farmyard, along with sweet smoke, creosote and smoked artichoke. On the palate, the dram is spicy and smoky with flavours of coal dust, cardamom, peppermint and eucalyptus, followed by hints of aniseed sweets and antiseptic lozenges. The finish is a long one, lingering with an almost anaesthetising sensation. Mind-blowing!
