This 25-year-old single malt Scotch is distilled at Laphroaig on the isle of Islay. The nose is peaty and medicinal with sweet notes of vanilla, golden syrup and biscuit, before dry hay and white pepper. The palate has luxurious manuka honey to the fore with fragrant heather, wood smoke, salted toffee and stewed fruits. The finish is peaty and salty with a typically Islay sea breeze.

Sweet honey, thyme, and pear drop aromas arrive on the nose. Herbaceous, smoky, honey notes arrive on the palate, alongside black pepper, spices, clementine zest and medicinal notes. The finish is dry, with a vein of sea salt and a zing of spring flowers.

The story is a fifteen-part series of rare aged single malts, celebrating chapters in the life of Ian Hunter, the last member of the distillery’s founding family to own and manage Laphroaig. Hunter took the helm of the distillery in 1908 and was responsible for launching Laphroaig as a single malt. This series commemorates Hunter’s influence and celebrates the unique spirit that he helped create. This 2019 release is aged for thirty years in first-fill American white oak bourbon barrels and bottled at a strength of 46.7% abv free from chill filtration, with just 4,800 bottles produced.

The second book of the story starts with Warehouse No.1. With the different cask types being brought by Ian Hunter, including ex-bourbon barrels and sherry cask, Ian recognised the need for more capacity to house them. Ian selected the location by the Atlantic shore that would have its influence on the casks, and planned a five-phased extension between 1910 and 1924.

This 2020 release is aged for thirty years in Spanish Oak Oloroso Sherry oak barrels and bottled at a strength of 48.2% abv free from chill-filtration.

The nose has dried dates and figs, with notes of toffee and dark chocolate underscored by liquorice and medicinal flavours. Adding water brings out pipe tobacco and orange peel. The smoke continues in the palate, although the presence of manuka honey adds a lovely sweetness to the mouthfeel before a long and drying finish.

This whisky is presented in a beautifully crafted book that documents a section of Ian’s rich legacy. Every year a new chapter is told, uncovering the extensive history behind Laphroaig and the characters who created it. This chapter tells the story of the competition between neighbours over every distillery’s essential ingredient, water. This expression was fully matured in ex-bourbon barrels, is free from chill filtration, and comes at 49.9% abv.

The result is a sensational Laphroaig single malt. Aromas of pears, peaches and apricots open this elegant whisky, followed by notes of honey, nutmeg, and a twist of peat. The taste gives a sweet, syrupy feel, with waves of aniseed and creamy liquorice notes. The finish is very long, with lingering ashy vanilla and peaty flavours. A meticulously made, showstopping whisky.
