Description
Bunnahabhain has long been defined by a gentler, more sherried character than its Islay neighbours but An Cuan Garbh No.1 marks a deliberate step in a different direction. The name is Gaelic for “rough sea,” and it sets the tone for what’s in the bottle: bolder and more assertive Bunnahabhain.
Matured for 15 years, the liquid was finished in white port casks – a less commonly used finishing vessel in Scotch whisky – the influence of which can clearly be detected in the clean, vibrant profile.
Bottled at 51.6% abv, expect a nose of citrus peel and soft orchard fruit with honeyed malt, sea spray, and gentle toasted oak. The palate is bright and fruit-forward, with coastal character, gentle spice, and honeyed malt sweetness. On the finish, this is warm and lingering dram, with toasted oak spice and a final breath of sea air.
